Join the Band

 

All students at the University of Memphis are invited to audition for The University of Memphis Marching Band, the Mighty Sound of the South. The Mighty Sound is one of the largest student organizations on campus, and includes students with a diverse range of interests, enrolled in programs of study that span every college at the University of Memphis. We also welcome students who are enrolled in local community colleges to audition.

As a student in the Mighty Sound of the South, you will gain access to scholarships and out-of-state tuition waivers, travel to exciting locations in support of our athletic teams, be part of a rich university and band tradition, engage in meaningful music making, and regularly perform for audiences in the tens of thousands. All of this, while forging relationships that will last a lifetime.

1 – Fill out an Interest Form 

The first step in joining the Mighty Sound of the South is to fill out the interest form. This form tells tell us some basic facts about you, including your contact information, which will allow us to keep you updated on important dates and information.

2 – Apply to the University of Memphis

Incoming freshmen and transfer students should apply for admission to the University using the appropriate application on the UofM Admissions page.

If you are attending a local community college and are interested in being in the University of Memphis Marching Band, there is a simple way for you to do this. 3 – Audition

Each student in the Mighty Sound of the South must complete an audition. The audition process is different for each section of the band. Please see below for more detail.

Winds

Auditions for woodwinds and brass are held throughout the spring semester. We recommend you schedule an in-person audition, but we do accept video submissions if you are unable to travel to campus. However you choose to complete it, the audition should include:

  • A-Flat Major scale
  • F Major scale
  • D Major scale
  • 3 minutes of music (You choose what to play. We just want to hear you at your best!)
  • Forward march at 80 beats/minute
  • Forward march at 160 beats/minute
  • Backward march at 80 beats/minute
  • Backward march at 160 beats/minute

Drumline

Monday Night Drumline Class:

In preparation for drumline auditions, we are offering a free class every Monday night, starting January 22nd, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the Communication and Fine Arts Building (CFA) room 137. The classes are not mandatory to become a member of the drumline but are highly encouraged, as we will be working on the 2018 exercises and audition pieces. We only have a limited number of drums and want everyone that comes to be able to play the entire time, so we ask that you bring your own instrument if you are able. Audition:

Auditions for the drumline will be held on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Communication and Fine Arts building, room 137, on the the University of Memphis campus. The audition will consist of playing in a full battery setting during the morning, with individual auditions conducted in the afternoon. All material needed for the audition is compiled in a packet, which can be obtained by emailing Zeke David - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You should be prepared to mark time with all exercises.

If you are unable to attend the audition day, you may submit a video audition. The video should include all exercises and pieces listed below, must be played on a drum, with a metronome, and we must be able to see your feet, hands, and face. Video auditions should be uploaded to YouTube, and a link emailed to Zeke David, before 4 p.m. on May 5 - This email address is being protected from spambots. All music for the group audition, as well as the prepared pieces, is contained in the packet. The individual audition will consist of playing exercises from the packet or something similar that you already know, a short solo chosen by you, and the prepared pieces for your preferred instrument. Snares, tenors, and bass drums will need to play a variation of the following:

  • 8 on a Hand
  • 16th-note Timing
  • Triplet Timing
  • Grid in Duple and Triple
  • Double Beat
  • Triple Beat
  • Accent Tap
  • 16th-note Roll
  • Triplet Rolls
  • Paradiddles
  • Flams
  • Singles/Hertas

*Tenors should be ready to play drum 2 and arounds, and bass drummers should be ready to play any drum.

Color Guard

Auditions for the color guard will be held on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Elma Roane Field House on the the University of Memphis campus. Tigerettes

The University of Memphis Tigerettes are looking for talented twirlers with the ability to entertain large crowds using charisma and personality. In addition to being a vital part of Mighty Sound of the South performances, Tigerettes are considered ambassadors for our university, and our members must embody the pride and tradition of our institution. If you have what it takes to be a Tigerette, please join us for our audition day on May 5th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the Elma Roane Field House. 

For the audition, dance twirl routine should be between two and three minutes in length, and include a 2 spin, toss leap, layback, and toss illusion. You must incorporate at least one baton and two baton in your routine. If auditioning for Feature Twirler, you must have a 3 spin, toss cartwheel, toss leap, layback, high toss bow, and toss illusion in your routine. A high toss front walkover and creative toss leaps are strongly encouraged. You must include one baton, two baton, and three baton (at least 3 tricks). A Downfield Strut routine is also required where the athlete must travel from one side of the floor and back. As much as possible, audition routines should reflect the style of the University of Memphis Tigerettes.  This style is a combination of twirling and dancing.  All candidates will be judged on technique, showmanship, skill, endurance, coordination, appearance, creativity, and crowd appeal.

4 – Register for the course

All students in the Mighty Sound of the South are required to register for the course, Marching Band – MUAP 2002, which you will be able to do once you have been admitted to the University. Marching Band is a two-credit course, and rehearsals are held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The color guard rehearses Monday, Tuesday, and Friday at the same times. Be sure to register as soon as you are able, to help avoid scheduling conflicts.
